DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY SCIENCE
The Department of Military Science (DMS) falls under
the College of Liberal Arts of the University of Texas
at Arlington. The Professor of Military Science
(PMS) is the Chair of the Department and is responsible
for both the academic and administrative functioning of
the Department. The PMS is assisted by a mix cadre
of Army active duty officers and NCO's, contracted
(usually retired or Reserve and National Guard) officers
and NCOs, Department of the Army Civilians, and UTA
employees.
UTA is an Army-only
Military Science program. The Army ROTC staff is
seamlessly integrated with the functions of the
University in order to achieve maximum efficiency of the
resources available. The PMS principal assistant
is the Commandant of Cadets who is primarily responsible
for running the day-to-day operations of the department
and the Corps of Cadets. The battalion executive
officer (XO) is primarily responsible for the Army
official functions like administration and logistics,
and is occupied by an active duty captain. The PMS
right hand is the Senior Military Instructor (SMI) a
seasoned active duty Master Sergeant who is the military
expert and oversees all tactical training of the cadets.
In addition the DMS has enrollment officers, an
administrative section, an operations and training
section, an university assistant, and a selected group
of Army reservist who assist the PMS in field training
exercises (FTX), cadet functions, military science
instructors, and other duties as required. A
complete listing of the cadre can be found in the
